Within seconds of opening this book, I submitted my request to return it. Is the author aware that this is black & white? The artist's color schemes and values are so important in her teaching. The paper is like newsprint. There is so little contrast in the print that it's difficult to read, much less try to see the difference between photos of her paintings (which I know are very colorful). The chapter on color mixing, etc. is obviously useless because there are no color photos. That's page 61 in my photo. Do you see the red? I don't! I'm very disappointed. I looked forward to this book so much. If you have watched Laurel Hart on you tube, you know what type of work she does. She is a very positive, encouraging teacher and while I may not choose to paint in her exact style, I learn something new every time I watch her. She really is a master of what I would call "realistic" watercolor - her signature style is to use her own unique colors - not "local color" to create accurate paintings of people and settings which she loves. Her passion is evident and shines through in the book. I would not always choose to use her colors, which tend to lean a bit toward a southwestern look - she lives in Utah - so that's excellent for her! But, if you read her book, she wouldn't want you to do everything "her way"; she wants you to continue your artistic journey and find what works for you. I will confess I found some of the exercises pretty difficult; but that's how one learns...practice, practice...and patience. The work she creates as she moves along really are stunning - amazingly challenging to do in watercolor which is a difficult medium to master. Laurel will encourage you to just keep at it. She is a wonderful artist - and person - all this comes through in her book. Thank you Laurel Hart!
